PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient data encoding method and apparatus utilizing a reversible wavelet filter for a lossless/lossy data compression system. SOLUTION: In the encoding part of the lossless/lossy compression system, a reversible wavelet filter 102 converts input image data into a plurality of coefficients. An ordering/modeling block 103 orders the plurality of coefficients and binary values in each coefficient and generates an embedded codestream corresponding to the plurality of coefficients. An entropy coder 104 performs entropy coding on the embedded codestream to produce a compressed data stream. The reversible wavelet filter 102 is the efficient transformation of precise restoration realized by integral arithmetic. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
