PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup apparatus and an image pickup method in which highly accurate exposure control is performed while shortening a release time lag. SOLUTION: The image pickup method is provided with a through picture exposure control step for controlling exposure for through picture display by operating the exposure with photometry while displaying a through picture and a one-stage exposure control step for controlling the exposure by operating the exposure with photometry adjusting a diaphragm by a diaphragm control means based upon the exposure operated result in the through picture exposure control step.
