The automatic gearbox has a number of gear stages, at least one drive cog and at least one driven cog associated with each gear stage. Each of the cogs mounted on a shaft allows its relative rotation and is locked for rotation with the shaft via a coupling device, for transmission of drive torque via the cog. Synchronization devices each allow a rotating cog to be synchronized with the shaft rotation during gear changing, at least one position detection device providing the positions of the synchronization devices, stored characteristics relating to the setting positions and the transmitted torques updated via actual torque-setting position pairs of values.
