A board positioning device to selectively position in a lateral direction in a generally horizontal plane, a board translating in a longitudinal direction in the horizontal plane towards a multiple saw trimmer, wherein the board is aligned along its length in the lateral direction. The positioning of the board is accomplished by the disclosed apparatus, which includes a board marking device, a selectively actuable positioning device in compressive contact with both top and bottom faces of a board to move a board in a lateral direction as the board is simultaneously translating in a longitudinal direction, and a scanning device to check that the board did in fact move the desired amount in the lateral direction. The invention may include a plurality of marking devices to allow a mark to be placed on an area of flat board surface. The invention may further include a plurality of positioning and scanning devices to allow the board to be positioned incrementally. The positioning process and the saw selection for each cut may be determined either by a computer/optimizer system or by manual input from an operator.
