There is provided a device and method for detecting low fills in a bottling line wherein a single pulse of light in a narrow beam is used to determine that the level o f liquid in the container meets a predetermined level, said level being the central base portion of the liquid meniscus. This mode of evaluation is more accurate and reduces the number of false low-fills.
