PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for controlling operation of a clockwise/counterclockwise compressor of a refrigerator are provided to accurately control temperature in the refrigerator by selecting clockwise direction/counterclockwise direction rotating of a compressor depending on operation mode of the refrigerator, and chancing current operating frequency to supply chilled air into the refrigerator. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus includes a microcomputer(12) calculating amount of chilled air to be supplied depending on operation mode a user selects, and outputting corresponding operation control signal; an operating frequency converting part(11) converting current operating frequency into fixed operating frequency depending on the operating control signal; and a clockwise/counterclockwise signal generating part(14) receiving frequency converting signal output by the operating frequency converting signal to generate clockwise direction signal or counterclockwise direction signal depending on the operation control signal.
