The display has an address driver (55) for producing an address discharge within a discharge cell to set the cell at a light in on or off state, by applying a pixel data pulse based on an image signal, to respective column electrodes, while applying a scanning pulse. The pulse is applied to a row electrode having a longer distance to the cell of the respective row electrodes within another discharge cell. The discharge cell has a portion where the respective row electrodes in pair are opposed to each other with a predetermined discharge gap within a discharge space included a portion where a light absorbing layer is provided. An independent claim is also included for a driving method for driving a display panel.
