PURPOSE: A packet forwarding device having a complex traffic processing function is provided to be independently used for a system of transmission media accessed in a physical layer, and to include packet classifying/schedule controlling, packet editing, and cell segmenting/assembling processes, thereby simply realizing a device capable of receiving complex traffic. CONSTITUTION: A fixed length cell interface controller(102) interfaces cell data. A POS(Packet Over SDH) interface controller(103) interfaces packet data. A fixed length cell switch interface(502) interfaces cell data with a switch board. A variable length packet switch interface(503) interfaces packet data with a routing function module. The first cell assemble/segment controller inputs ingress cells to re-assemble the cells as ingress packets, and segments egress packets to egress cells. An ingress packet processor verifies availability of the ingress packets, and outputs re-edited ingress packets. The second cell assemble/segment controller segments the ingress packets to ingress cells, and re-assembles the cells into egress packets. A traffic controller(404) inputs the outputted ingress packets to the variable length packet switch interface(503). An egress packet processor re-edits the egress packets to new egress packets. A packet transmission controller(207) outputs the outputted egress packets to the first cell assemble/segment controller or the POS interface controller(103).
