432,852. Filters. YOUNG, F. W., Upper Montclair, New Jersey, U.S.A. Feb. 4, 1935, No. 3589. Convention date, June 23, 1934. [Class 46] [See also Group XXIX] A filter comprises a rotary drum mounted in a tank and having independent filtering compartments on its periphery each compartment being provided with a port communicating with the interior of the drum and opened and closed successively by a gravity-operated valve, and the two ends of the drum being closed except for a passage through one end establishing communication between the interior and exterior of the drum. The drum 1 is mounted on trunnions one of which is hollow and communicates with a vacuum pump while the other is geared to a driving-motor. The independent filtering compartments 13 are separated by partitions 14 and are covered by filtering material supported by a screen 15. A port 17 in each compartment is controlled by a gravity-operated valve comprising a tubular fitting 18 and a counterbalanced arcuate shoe 24 mounted on a shaft and adapted when wet effectively to close the end of the tubular fitting. The ports 17 may all be in the same plane, or they may be staggered. They are opened automatically by the counterweights 25 as they descend into the liquid and are closed as they rise. The point at which they open or close may be regulated by adjusting the counterweight. The level of liquid within the drum is nearly the same as that in the tank 4. |
