The apparatus has a steering shaft (8) with a rack meshed with a pinion (12). A steering mechanism (7) has a rotary cylinder surrounding the shaft. The mechanism converts rotation of the cylinder into an axial movement of the shaft. The shaft is supported by the cylinder, pinion and a guide of a steering shaft guiding device (17). The pinion is located between the cylinder and the guide axially of the shaft.
