The tank is made from impregnated polymerisable filaments (22) of a composition material, wound over a mandrel (14) in sections with a recess for a twin-walled metal insert (4), preferably of aluminium. After polymerisation of the tank's outer wall (2) the mandrel sections are removed through apertures in the tank wall and the insert is deployed inside it by injecting a fluid and with optional assistance from a piston. The deployed insert forms an internal tank which is covered with a thermal insulation layer and attached by adhesive to the inner surface of the main tank after being reversed so that its insulation layer forms a barrier between the two tank compartments.
