PURPOSE: A mild, stable and effective cleansing composition is provided, which composition has low skin irritation without loss of its stability, and improved foaming properties by adding hydrophobically modified, crosslinked, anionic acrylic copolymer. CONSTITUTION: The mild, stable and effective cleansing composition comprises (a) 0.1 to 12.5% of anionic surfactant, and (b) 0.1 to 8% of hydrophobically modified, crosslinked, anionic acrylic copolymer, wherein the weight ratio of the anionic surfactant to the hydrophobically modified, crosslinked, anionic acrylic copolymer is 1:1 to about 40:1; and the composition is mild to the skin and/or eye and is substantially free of amphoteric surfactant; the anionic surfactant is selected from alkyl sulfate, alkyl ether sulfate, sulfosuccinate, isethionate, acyl amide, alkyl ether carboxylate, alkyl phosphate, and a mixture thereof; and the hydrophobically modified, crosslinked, anionic acrylic copolymer comprises at least one acidic monomer and at least one hydrophobic ethylene-based unsaturated monomer.
