<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical anisotropic layer, a retardation plate and an elliptic polarization plate contributing to the enlargement of a visibility angle of a liquid crystal display device. <P>SOLUTION: The optical anisotropic layer is constituted by aligning bar-shaped liquid crystalline molecules in uniform inclined nematic orientation where an average tilt angle is 35 to 85° to the plane of the layer and the tilt angle on either boundary side and the other tilt angle on the other boundary side are substantially equal in the layer, and its phase difference in wavelength 550nm is 80 to 200nm; the retardation plate has the optical anisotropic layer and a 2nd optical anisotropic layer whose phase difference in the wavelength 550nm is 200 to 350nm and whose Nz factor (=(nx-nz)/(nx-ny)) is 0.5 to 2.0; and the elliptic polarization plate has the retardation plate and a polarizer. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
