<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyanion type lithium iron multiple oxide used for a positive electrode active material of a lithium secondary battery, and to provide the battery using the polyanion type lithium iron multiple oxide. <P>SOLUTION: The polyanion type lithium iron multiple oxide is obtained by mixing at least a lithium-containing material, a material containing iron having a valency of <+2, a polyanion forming element-containing material and an oxidizing agent and firing at 300-1,000°C. The material containing iron having the valency of <+2 is particularly a metallic iron, and as the oxidizing agent, a material containing iron having valency of >+2, particularly Fe<SB>3</SB>O<SB>4</SB>is used.
