<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transparent optical film with superior optical properties, exhibiting uniform phase-contrast distribution and having the occurrence of rainbow unevenness suppressed. <P>SOLUTION: A birefringent material, containing a non-liquid-crystal polymer, is dissolved in methyl isobutyl ketone to thereby obtain a coating solution. This coating solution is applied to a transparent film so as to form a coating film, and this coating film is dried. Thus, an optical film, having a birefringent layer superimposed directly on the transparent film, is obtained. As the non-liquid-crystal polymer, use can be made of a polyimide, whose birefringence index (Δn<SB>xyz</SB>) in the direction of thickness when it is formed into a film, is 0.03 or higher, with the polyimide being soluble in methyl isobutyl ketone. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
