<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive and lightweight liquid crystal display device capable of stably providing such excellent display quality that background colors are nearly eliminated. <P>SOLUTION: The direction 5a of front orientation processing and the direction 7a of rear orientation processing applied to a front orientation film and a rear orientation film of a liquid crystal cell C are at -35±5° and 35±5° to the horizontal direction (h) of a display screen, and consequently liquid crystal molecules are subjected to twist alignment over 250±10° from the rear to the front, so that Δn d is 770 to 850 nm. On the front side of the liquid crystal cell C, a 1st retardation plate 8 and a 2nd retardation plate 9 of 400 to 450 nm in retardation are layered in such arrangement that slow axes 8a and 9a are at 65±5° and 20±5° respectively to the horizontal direction (h), and a front polarizing plate 10 is layered thereupon in arrangement that an axis 10a of absorption is at 95±5° to the horizontal direction. On the rear side of the liquid crystal cell C, a rear polarizing plate 11 is layered in such arrangement that an axis of absorption is at 85±5° to the horizontal direction (h). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
