<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a brake controller for an elevator capable of achieving reductions in electric-power capacity, cost and size and contribution to energy saving. <P>SOLUTION: This brake controller for the elevator includes a spring device which always presses brake shoes 8A, 9A against a brake drum 6 of the elevator to produce braking force and a plurality of electromagnets 8, 9 which separate the brake shoe from the brake drum against the spring device to release the braking force at the time of energization.
