<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical compensation film and an elliptic polarizing plate which are used for providing a liquid crystal display device that has improved gradation inversion and the characteristic of a wider viewing angle and is excellent in industrial productivity. <P>SOLUTION: The optical compensation film is formed from layers including at least a transparent support, a first optical anisotropic layer and a second optical anisotropic layer which are bonded together in that order. In the optical compensation film, the first optical anisotropic layer is made of at least disk like liquid crystal molecules, the angles of the inclinations of the disk like liquid crystal molecules change in one direction over a distance in relation to the face of the transparent support, the average tilt angles 15° to 55°, the thickness of the layer is 0.5 to 5μm. The second optical anisotropic layer is made of at least rod like liquid crystal molecules, the average tilt angle of the rod like liquid crystal molecules is 10° to 50°, the thickness of the layer is 0.2 to 2.0 μm. A retardation value (Re value) within the plane of the transparent support is 0 to 50 nm, and a retardation value (Rth value) in its thickness direction is 0 to 100 nm. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
