<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device in which the picture characteristics seen square are not deteriorated, lowering of contrast of a picture seen diagonally is prevented, and which has a wide angle of view and provides uniform and high contrast seen from any direction. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device has at least an optically anisotropic body (A), an optically anisotropic body (B) and a liquid crystal cell between a pair of polarizers disposed in a positional relationship that their transmission axes are nearly perpendicular to each other. The liquid crystal display device is characterized by having the optically anisotropic body (A) which is composed of a material layer with a negative intrinsic birefringence value and the optically anisotropic body (B) which is composed of a material layer with a positive intrinsic birefringence value wherein the optically anisotropic bodies (A), (B) are in a positional relationship that their in-plane slow axes are nearly parallel or perpendicular to each other, and having the in-plane slow axis of the optically anisotropic body (A) and the transmission axis of the polarizer disposed in the vicinity thereof are in a positional relationship that they are nearly parallel or perpendicular to each other. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
