The method involves placing a transmission device (21) in a place in field of view of a video camera (2), and activating the device to transmit electromagnetic initialization radiation such as light signal, in a direction of camera. Images issued from camera are analyzed to know the initialization signal. A detection zone is defined in the field of view, from coordinates of the initialization signal in image using a preset program. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a device for programming an image acquisition system (B) an apparatus for monitoring a predetermined zone, and comprising a programming device.
