An electrochemical display having an excellent display characteristic while preventing deterioration of display density with time, and its drive method are disclosed. An image is displayed by applying a voltage to a pixel electrode in each pixel to precipitate and dissolve a metal. Gradation display is achieved by controlling the time during which a write voltage is applied to a pixel electrode. The density of current flowing in the pixel by the write voltage is 50 mA/cm2 or less. The time during which the write voltage is applied is divided into sub-fields. In each sub-field, application of voltage is determined to control the time during which the write voltage is applied.
