PROJECTION TYPE IMAGE DISPLAY APPARATUS AND OPTICAL UNIT USED FOR THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide projection type image display technology for securing high image quality of an image by suppressing astigmatism and total reflection caused by a polarizing/separating means.

SOLUTION: A polarizing/separating means has the constitution in which a polarizing/separating element where an air layer is formed in contact with a polarizing/separating plane for polarizing/separating light by diffraction based on a grid structure, is arranged in a medium such as liquid. The projection type image display apparatus or the optical unit using the polarizing/separating means has the constitution in which the light emitted to the light valve or the light modulated by the light valve is polarized/separated by the polarizing/separating plane which is inclined to the light irradiation surface of the light valve at an angle of <45°.
