<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection display apparatus wherein black color floating display is suppressed and high contrast can be realized. <P>SOLUTION: The projection display apparatus is provided with a light modulating means. The light modulating means is provided with a liquid crystal layer 80 of negative dielectric anisotropy having a pretilt and an optical compensation plate 92 having refractive index anisotropy in an optical axis direction. When refractive indices in azimuthal angle directions orthogonal to each other in the plane of the optical compensation plate 92 are defined as nx and ny, respectively and when refractive index in the thickness direction is defined as nz, nz<nx or nz<ny is satisfied, the optical compensation plate 92 has in-plane retardation by satisfying nx>ny and a delay phase axis 92a of the in-plane retardation is nearly vertical to the azimuthal angle direction of the pretilt of the liquid crystal layer 80. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
