<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic ink character reading apparatus, a method for controlling the magnetic ink character reading apparatus, a magnetic ink character reading method, a program and POS terminal equipment for suppressing the erroneous reading of an optical reading apparatus due to any signature or background pattern or the like and thereby improving a reading rate when reading a character string formed by connecting magnetic ink characters in a medium to be processed. <P>SOLUTION: This magnetic character reading apparatus for reading the character string of magnetic ink characters is provided with a magnetic reading part having a magnetic reading mechanism 45 and an optical reading part having an optical reading mechanism 47. A magnetic reading result is compared with an optical reading result (a step of S5), and when those results are different, optical reading is executed again (a step of S6).
