<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which can be easily changed into between a display mode with a wide viewing angle and a display mode with a narrow viewing angle, and which has fast response speed and excellent display quality in both display modes. <P>SOLUTION: The device has a liquid crystal panel 1 holding a first liquid crystal layer between a pair of substrates and an optical compensator 40 to optically compensate retardation in the first liquid crystal layer containing bend-aligned liquid crystal molecules. The optical compensator 40 comprises retardation plates 42A, 42B having retardation in the thickness direction and liquid crystal cells 43A, 43B each having a second liquid crystal layer containing hybrid-aligned liquid crystal molecules. By controlling voltages applied on the first liquid crystal layer and the second liquid crystal layer, the device is changed in between a first display mode forming a display state with almost zero retardation of the sum retardation in the thickness direction of the first liquid crystal layer and the optical compensator, and a second display mode forming a display state with different retardation of the sum from the first display mode. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
