<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a sludge volume measurement apparatus for efficiently and uniformly irradiating a measurement pipe with light from a light emitting source, and obtaining the light sufficient to enable a photodetector to detect transmission light. <P>SOLUTION: In the sludge volume measurement apparatus, a light emitting section 5 for emitting the light from the light source 2 is externally provided on one side face of a measurement tank 1 includes the side faces and the bottom face, and the optical sensor 8 is externally provided on the other side face. The measurement tank 1 has a portion for transmitting the light from the light emitting section 5 to the optical sensor 8. A sludge mixture liquid is introduced into the measurement tank 1 at a fixed liquid level. The light transmitted from the light emitting section 5 to the optical sensor 8 through the measurement tank 1 is detected by the optical sensor 8 after a predetermined time is elapsed. The sludge volume measurement apparatus measures the sludge volume of the sludge mixture liquid from the quantity of the light detected by the optical sensor 8.
