PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent stress corrosion cracking at a portion near weld zone of stainless steel piping by means of a compact device. SOLUTION: Piping 1 is supplied with water and watertight plugs 3 and 3 are formed at two separate places in the piping. The water 2 inside the piping between the watertight plugs is cooled by supplying dry ice 8 into an outer container 4 and then an inner container 5. Since the piping is cooled, the water is solidified so that ice is formed. Attendant on the formation of the ice, the volume of the piping inside expands so that the piping is subjected to plastic deformation. This improves the residual stress of the piping.
