[Class 53] The gas which collects in the space above the electrolyte while a battery is in use or on open circuit is absorbed by electrodes which are given a potential by connection with the main electrodes of the battery. The connection may be made through a resistance and the metal container of the battery may constitute the absorbing electrode. The latter may be made of platinum or other platinum metal and may be finely divided and may be in the form of a coating on the lugs of the main electrodes. The Figure shows a construction in which a part of the inner surface of the container is provided with a platinum or palladium coating a which is connected through resistances w<1>, w<2> with the battery electrodes e<1>, e<2>. In a modification the whole of the inner surface of the container is coated with platinum and is connected through a resistance to only one of the electrodes e<1>. |
