Textiles composed at least in part of synthetic fibres are (i) swollen with (a) an aq. soln. of a phenolic, benzoic or benzenic cpd. esp. phenol, o-Ph-phenol, Me or Et salicylate, anisole, Me, Et or Bu benzoate, chlorobenzene, o-dichlorobenzene, bromobenzene, nitrobenzene or acetophenone, (b) an aq. soln. of I2-KI, (c) a mixt. of a solvent and a non-solvent for the synth. fibre esp. one of water or alcohol and acetone, THF, DMSO nitromethane aniline, or o-or m-cresol, or (d) a weak solvent for the fibre such as acetone or another lower ketone, (ii) opt. passing through a series of liquids which replace the swelling agent, the last one pref. contg. a polymsn. initiator, (iii) including a monomer which generates an elastomer, in the vapour or gas phase, and (ii) removing excess reactants and by-prods. as well as surface homopolymer by washing and/or extraction and stabilising the polymer with an antioxidant. Props. are improved. Method was previously only applicable to cellulosics.
|
