<p>1337296 Ethylene oxide ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO 28 Sept 1971 [4 Dec 1970] 45151/71 Heading C2C Ethylene oxide is prepared by epoxidation of ethylene by reaction with tertiary butyl hydroperoxide in the presence of a molybdenum catalyst and, as solvent, benzene, an alkylated benzene having 1-6 carbon atoms in the alkyl group or groups or a C 7 -C 14 alkane, the reaction being effected at 80-115‹ C. with a mole ratio of ethylene to hydroperoxide of 5 ; 1 to 20 : 1 and mole ratio of solvent to hydroperoxide of 12 : 1 to 25 : 1. Many molybdenum compounds which can be employed as catalyst are listed as are a large number of solvents, a preferred solvent being tertiary butyl benzene.</p> |
