They may be obtained by (a) reduction of a compound of the formula wherein B is OH, alkoxy, aralkoxy, acyloxy or halogen; (b) reduction of compounds of Formula I wherein A is to give compounds of Formula I in which A is (c) when A is dehydration of a compound of formula (d) when A is hydrogenolysis of an ether of formula wherein R 2 is an optionally substituted benzyl, benzhydryl or trityl group; (e) when A is reaction of a compound of formula wherein Hal is Cl, Br or I, with formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde; and (f) when A is reduction of an aldehyde of the Formula II wherein B is H. Examples are given for the production of the compounds. The compounds of Formula I have antiphlogistic activity and may be administered orally, rectally or parenterally in conventional forms. Compounds of Formula IV may be obtained by reacting a 4-biphenylyl-3-halogenopropiophenone of formula wherein Hal is halogen, with an alcohol of formula R 2 -OH to given an ether of formula reacting this ether with a methyl magnesium halide in absolute ether at reflux temperature to give an ether of formula and reducing this ether by means of catalytically activated hydrogen to give compounds of Formula IV. |
