Prepn of sec or tert (cyclo)aliphatic amines - by reductive alkylation with a silver/palladium catalyst on a sintered support

The prepn. of sec. or tert. aliphatic or cycloaliphatic amines (I) is carried out by reacting a (cyclo)aliphatic carbonyl cpd. (II) with NH3 or a primary or sec. (cyclo)aliphatic amine (III) in the presence of H2 and a catalyst comprising a mixt. of Ag and Pd on a thermally sintered support. The molar ratio of NH3 to (II) is pref. =8 : 1 and the molar ratio of (III) to (II) is pref. =4:1. The catalyst is highly selective (alcohol formation being suppressed) and high yields (>95% in the case of ketones) are obtained.
