Cpds. (I) useful as tranquillisers, anticonvulsants, analgesics etc. are prepd. from cpds. (II) (where R1 and R2 are H or alkyl, rings A and B are opt. substd. by halogen, NO2, alkyl, CF3 or alkoxy, n is 1 or 2 andR3 is a blocked amino gp). Thus (I R1 = Me, n = 1, R2 = H, A = 8-Cl substd) is prepd. by reacting (II, R1=Me, n = 1, R2 = H, A = 8-Cl substd., R3 = NHCOOCH2Ph) with HBr/HOAc.
