1361068 Blood substitute GREEN CROSS CORP and TANABE SEIYAKU CO Ltd 6 Sept 1971 [5 Sept 1970 29 July 1971] 41532/71 Heading A5B [Also in Division B1] An oxygen-carrying emulsion useful in blood transfusions is prepared by (a) emulsifying in an aqueous salt solution with a surface active agent a compound selected from perfluorooctane, perfluorotributylamine, 2-hydroxy-perfluoro - 3,6,9,12 - tetraoxa - 5,8,11 - trimethyl - pentadecane, perfluorodecalin, perfluoromethyldecalin and perfluorobutyltetrahydrofuran, (b) centrifuging the emulsion to adjust the particle size of the fluorine compound to 0.05-0.25Á and (c) sterilizing the emulsion under rotation. The aqueous salt solution may contain sodium chloride, potassium chloride, magnesium chloride, sodium acetate, sodium gluconate, sodium lactate or Ringers Solution. The surface active agent may be co-polyethylene glycol-polypropylene glycol, yolk lecithin or soyabean lecithin. The emulsion or its constituents may be de-aerated by heat or reduced pressure, saturated with oxygen and thereafter handled in an oxygen atmosphere. The sterilization may be effected by heating.
