1354361 L-Serine KYOWA HAKKO KOGYO KK 19 April 1971 [25 Feb 1970 6 May 1970] 22659/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] L-Serine is prepared by reacting glycine with formaldehyde in the presence of threoninealdolase prepared by means of a threoninealdolase producing microorganism, e.g. Candida humicola, C. utilis, C. rugosa, Bacterium cadaveris, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Arthrobacter simplex or Xanthomonas campestris. The microorganisms themselves may be used as the source of the enzyme, in the culture medium or after separation therefrom, or the impure or pure separated enzyme may be used. Preferably a thiol compound is present in the reaction medium, e.g. mercaptoethanol, dithiothreitol, glutathione, or 1,2-dithioglycerol.
