1357181 Centrifugal compressors CARRIER CORP 28 May 1971 [8 June 1970] 17977/71 Heading F1C In a multi-stage compressor comprising a rotor 6, Fig. 1, located in a casing 4, the rotor is supported in overhung fashion by bearings (24, 25), Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), and is coupled to a coaxial drive-shaft by a releasable coupling (49), e.g. of spline or taper form. In the embodiment shown the compressor driving means comprises an electric motor 7 and step-up gearing 8. However, the gear housing 19 may be replaced by a housing (55) containing a driving turbine (59). In either case the housing 19 or (55) is centred on a protruding portion of fluid guide means 39 located in the casing 4. Moreover, the housing is rigidly connected to the fluid guide means as by studs (40), and is connected to the casing in a manner permitting limited relative radial movement therebetween as by bolts (53) located in oversized apertures. The compressor comprises three stages associated with interstage coolers 11, 15 and demisters 12, 16 Specification 1357184. The assembly of the rotor and its associated stationary fluid guides, shrouds and diffusers, may be removed axially from the bore 100 in casing 4 in either direction. Inlet housing 2 is telescopically engaged as shown with the assembly. The arrangement is such that each driving means produces axial balancing thrust and thermal expansion characteristics suitably compatible with those of the compressor, e.g. the axial thrust produced by the helical gears balances that set up by the compressor.
|
