Catalytic isomerisation of alpha-pinene to beta-pinene by contacting the alpha-pinene at 150-300 degrees C under neutral or basic conditions with >= alkali metal or alkali metal alkoxide catalyst, separating the beta-pinene formed and recirculating the non-isomerised alpha-pinene fraction. The prod. is useful as an intermediate in the prodn. of terpene resin and fine chemicals.
