KK 20 Dec 1972 [20 Dec 1971 (5) 5 April 1972 18 April 1972 16 Oct 1972] 58685/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] One or more carbonates (including basic carbonates), hydroxides or oxides (including hydrates thereof) of beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, zinc, cadmium or aluminium in powder form, having a number average particle diameter of 0À01-50 Á, a maximum particle diameter of 100 Á and not more than 2% by weight of absorbed water is surface coated by being reacted with at least one aliphatic carboxylic acid which may have aromatic or heterocyclic substitution, or cycloaliphatic acid, these acids containing 1-2 ethylenic or cycloethylenic double bonds, 1-3 carboxylic groups and 3-11 carbon atoms and used in amounts of 0À05-20% by weight of the inorganic material. Reaction is effected with stirring at below the decomposition temperature of the carboxylic acid, in the absence of a radical generator and substantial absence of liquid water; liquid water of reaction and any CO 2 evolved are removed during reaction. Certain organic solvents may be present. The process may be effected at reduced, ordinary or elevated pressure and the acid may be introduced in vapour form. Examples 1, 4, 5, 9, 10, 14 and 25 describe the treatment of CaCO 3 , Example 11 of MgO, Example 12 of Al(OH) 3 and Example 3 includes most of the specified inorganic reagents. The exemplified acids are acrylic, methacrylic,α-ethyl acrylic,α-chloro acrylic, crotonic, sorbic, maleic, itaconic, vinyl acetic, vinylglycolic, angelic and styrylacrylic ; others are listed. The products are used as fillers for thermoplastic materials (see Division C3).</p> |
