1401233 Surface treatment of hydroxyethyl methacrylate polymers CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED 6 Oct 1972 [8 Oct 1971] 46246/72 Heading C3P The surface of an at least slightly crosslinked hydroxyethyl methacrylate polymer is treated with a sulphonation or phosphorylating agent. In examples polymers which are so treated are poly hydroxyethyl methacrylate, and a hydroxyethyl methacrylate/butylmethacrylate/ethyl dimethacrylate copolymer. These polymers are treated with fuming sulphuric acid vapour mixed with sulphur trioxide vapour or polyphosphoric acid and then neutralized. The process produces a hydrophilic surface layer and may be used to treat contact lenses, medical instruments and ships.
