1368417 Nitration process BOERINGER MANNHEIM GmbH 24 May 1973 [30 May 1972] 24859/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] A process for the continuous nitration of organic substances comprises applying the substance to be nitrated and a nitration liquid in a layer with a thickness of 0À2 to 1À5 mm. to the cooled surface of a rotating roller, allowing them to react thereon and, by movement of the cooled surface, removing the reaction product. As shown in Fig. 1, the nitration liquid and the substance to be nitrated are passed through inlets (3) and (4) on to a roller (1) which is cooled by means of a cooling liquid passed through axis (6). The reactants are transported by rotation of the roller into the gap (9) between the roller and trough (2). Any solid particles possibly present are comminuted in the gap (9) and the reacted solution leaves through overflow (5). Figs. 2 and 3 show other embodiments with two counter rollers (1) and (1<SP>1</SP>) arranged in tandem or above each other. The process is illustrated by the nitration of 1-phenyl-2- formamido - propane - 1,3 - diol with nitric acid to give 1-(4-nitrophenyl)-2-formamidopropane-1,3-diol.
