A grinding machine comprises a work-band 12, having a spindle 14 for engaging and rotating a workpiece, a loading shoot 16, for presenting successive workpieces 41 to a loading position 4111, a work-holder 17 for supporting a workpiece 41<SP>1</SP> in a grinding position, an unloading shoot 18 having a station 41<SP>1111</SP> aligned with the loading station, an arm 19 having a workpiece embracing element 22 movable between a first position aligned with the workpieoe at the loading station and a second position aligned with the spindle, and a plunger 23 operative in a single stroke to move a workpiece from the loading position 4111 into the element 23 when in the first position and, at the same time, move another workpiece from the element into the unloading position. The spindle 14 of the workhead is provided with a platen 15 for the workpiece and is driven by a belt drive 31 from a motor 28, the workpiece being supported by shoes 43, 45 of the work-holder 17. The loading shoot 16 is mounted on the work-head for supplying the workpieces to the loading station 41<SP>11</SP> which is on the axis of the plunger 23. The latter is movable by the rod 33 of a piston-andcylinder device 25 and is formed with a plug 48 connected by a bar 49 to a second plug 51, the space between the plugs receiving the workpiece embracing element on the arm 19 so that upon axial movement of the plunger, a ground workpiece is pushed out of the element by the plug 51 into the unloading shoot 18 and a new workpiece received between the plugs is pushed by plug 48 into the element. The arm 19 is movable about the axis of a shaft 21 by a piston- and-cylinder device 26 to move the workpiece embracing element between a position aligned with the plunger 23 and a position aligned with the spindle of the work-head which carries a grinding wheel 47 for grinding the internal surfaces of the workpieces. The workpieces, which may be ball races are loosely received within the workpiece embracing element which has cut outs 42 providing clearances for the shoes 43, 45, the workpieces being held out of engagement with the element during grinding. |
