The novel antibiotic product of the general formula <IMAGE> has a high solubility in water at neutral pH and can be administered by the oral, intramuscular or intravenous route. The antibiotic activity of the doxycyclin is preserved unchanged. The product shows higher tolerance, stability and blood levels superior to those of 6-deoxy-tetracyclins and derivatives thereof, lower toxicity, yet retains the antibiotic properties of the 6-deoxy-tetracyclins. The product is prepared by contacting a 6-deoxy-tetracyclin with an equimolar quantity of methionine in the presence of formaldehyde in a polar solvent at a temperature of 10-80 DEG C. |
