<p>The brake is particularly for use on winches used for oil-drilling, and incorporates a brake disc on the outside of one or both drum flanges, forming inner and outer braking surfaces. A frame attached to the baseplate carries a pair of brake shoes acting against the surfaces and applied to them at a controlled rate. The frame can hold the shoes in such a position in relation to the disc that the braking forces place it under tension, and it can swing on the baseplate between a roughly vertical operating position and one in which it is out of use, being held in the operating position by detachable arms. The shoes can be mounted on hydraulically-actuated blocks.</p> |
