1388672 Storing liquefied gases BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd 11 May 1972 [13 May 1971] 14809/71 Heading F4P In a double-walled vacuum vessel, a heat pipe 16 is mounted vertically within the inner vessel 12 by means of chains 17, 18 to prevent stratification of the vessel contents. The heat-pipe comprises a thin walled copper cylinder 19 sealed at each end, lined internally with a wick 20 of, e.g. gas fibre and filled with a quantity under pressure of the same gas as that being stored in liquefied form in the vessel. Introduction of the liquefied gas through pipe 14 will cause partial liquefaction of the gas in pipe 16, the gas condensing on the wick 20. Any increase of temperature at a particular level in the liquefied gas in the vessel will cause some of the condensed gas to vaporize and re-condense elsewhere thus transferring heat away from that particular level. In this way a substantially uniform temperature can be maintained throughout the liquefied gas. |
