1433791 Marker buoys INTERCONTINENTAL MARINE Ltd 16 May 1974 [21 May 1973] 24113/73 Headings B7A B7S and B7U A marker buoy carries at least one inflatable liferaft and is releasably attached to a vessel so that in an emergency it may either be launched by a davit or floats off as the vessel sinks whilst remaining secured to the sunken vessel by a cable 43, wound on a drum 40. In a preferred construction (Fig. 2) two inflatable liferafts are stowed in compartments closed by covers 74 and are inflated from respective carbon dioxide bottles 76 either by hand via respective first pull cords or by respective second pull cords which are tensioned by an associated line as the vessel sinks. Each of these lines is initially wound on a respective reel attached to a respective one of the second pull cords and, as the vessel sinks with the drum 40 reeling out the cable 43, it is reeled on to a respective auxiliary drum 59. When all the line is off its reel it tensions the associated pull cord and thereby opens the respective gas bottle and this occurs when the sinking vessel is well clear of the floating buoy. The inflated liferafts are held connected to the buoy by their painters 78. One of the compartments in which the liferafts are normally stowed also holds a buoyant mooring line which is streamed from the buoy for mooring other liferafts or boats. The rotation of the drum is damped by vanes which are mounted on its cheeks and by a friction brake. The top of the buoy 10 carries a radio transmitter 21, batteries 22, strobe light 23, antenna 29 and radar reflector 31. |
