Basically, the supply voltage to be transformed is applied to a square waveform generator with a frequency and mark to space ratio determined by factors including the required output voltage. This generator switches the supply voltage onto and from an inductance, through which current flows in repeated ramps positively and negatively. The switch used is simply a transistor, but may also be a silicon controlled rectifier. When the switch is opened the voltage overshoot is used to bias a diode in the forward direction and charge up a capacitance at the output of the circuit. The voltage on the capacitance is higher than the supply voltage and represents the output of the device.
