<p>1320628 Internally-coated open-cellular material JOHNSON & JOHNSON 21 May 1971 [22 May 1970] 16380/71 Heading B2E A uniform cohesive sheet for use as a bandage, tape or closure comprises (a) a porous, resilient open-cellular web of cell density 10-120 cells per running inch, the cellular surface area on at least the exposed exterior thereof occupying less than 15% of the total area of the exterior when the web is non-compressed, and (b) a non-pore-filling cohesive coating on the cell surfaces substantially throughout the web whereby compression of the sheet substantially increases the coated cellular surface area at the exposed exterior and thereby increases the cohesion characteristics of the sheet. The open-cell web may be a polyurethane-, vinyl-, styrenebutadiene- or rubber-based-foam and may be prepared from a closed cell foam by chemical treatment, bursting or perforating. The cohesive coating may be natural rubber or cis-polyisoprene and tackiness of the cohesive may be eliminated by addition of silicone fluids. The coating is applied to the foam by means of rollers followed by compression of the sheet, or by first spreading the cohesive on silicone-coated paper and rolling the foam placed on the coated paper with another sheet of silicone-paper on top to force the cohesive through the foam. The cohesive sheet can be reinforced by laminating with strengthening fabrics, coatings or fibres.</p> |
