<p>A ballast circuit for a mercury halide discharge lamp comprises a bridge rectifier providing a path between input and output terminals of the ballast circuit, and includes at least one electronic voltage doubling or tripling circuit providing a second path between the input and output terminals. The voltage doubling or tripling circuit contains a capacitance which is sufficiently high to effect during starting ionization of the starting gas and establish a state of conduction in the discharge lamp while having a sufficiently high impedance to be substantially ineffective during normal running of the lamp.</p> |
