An embodiment of a color filter array comprises a plurality of tiled minimal repeating units. Each minimal repeating unit comprises an M X N set of individual filters, and each individual filter in the set has a photoresponse selected among four different photoresponses. Each minimal repeating unit includes filters of a first photoresponse of a checkerboard pattern, and filters of a second photoresponse, a third photoresponse, and a fourth photoresponse distributed among the checkerboard pattern such that the filters of the second photoresponse, the third photoresponse, and the fourth photoresponse are sequentially symmetric with regard to one or two axes of a pair of orthogonal axes of the minimal repeating unit. |
