The present invention relates to a gastric-retentive sustained release formulation of metformin which is a medicine for treating non-insulin dependent diabetes, and to a manufacturing method thereof. More particularly, the gastric-retentive sustained release formulation of the present invention forms sustained release granules and can effectively control release of a drug while using a small amount of a polymer. The sustained release granules comprises: granules including metformin or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof and a swelling polymer; and a water-insoluble polymer film coated on the surfaces of the granules. In addition, the gastric-retentive sustained release formulation is formulated by mixing a superdisintegrant which adjusts gelation speed to form a hydrogel with the sustained release granules, and allows a tablet containing a drug can be rapidly swollen at initial stages.
